Reminds Me of Home

My parents in Cleveland use this wheel-spinny doohicky to tell the gas meter reading person what they should be charged, since their meter is in the basement. You check your meter, set the appropriate levels for each gauge, and hang this card on your door via a little suction cup or magnet.

It always struck me as odd that the meters weren't designed and built to be in the front yard near the sidewalk, at easy eye level where the meter reader could walk down the block and take readings, avoiding angry dogs, locked gates, landmines and etc - I mean, putting the meter in the basement? That's not efficient at all.

It won't be long until all of our meters will be tweeting their readings directly back to the utility, and the wheel-spinny doohickies will be no more.

  1. Ours went to electronic readers some years ago- now our meter guy just pulls into the yard and points his little radar gun out the window of the truck and it tells him what the reading is. As long as there are no obstructions and he has direct line of sight of the meter he can do it without getting out of his truck and avoid the nastiness of dogs and bad weather.
    Lucky him.
