Credi-Bull #19

Credi-Bull - a story that might be fact, and might be fiction. When playing, please avoid definitive answers like "I know this is true, I saw it on the news last night."..Instead, couch your vote as a "guess" - this will help ensure that everyone gets an unbiased chance to play!

Women spend an average of 70% more time personal grooming than men, and almost half of this grooming is hair removal. It's a common myth that women have less body hair than men - the follicle count for both sexes is the same - around 5 million hairs.

Hair removal for women in the United States came into fashion in the 1920's, when changing fashions revealed more bare skin, demanding more personal time spent grooming, and more money spent in beauty salons waxing and plucking.

Our millions of hairs aren't just an unwelcome remnant from the early days of humanity - hair still serves useful purposes, controlling sweat, managing debris and protecting the skin from abrasion.

Newly published research indicates that hair removal may actually have negative effects for women, especially those trying to conceive a child.

When a hair is plucked, the root is torn from the body - the dermis layer of the skin senses this as an injury, and a series of chemicals are released to repair the damage. When thousands of hairs have been plucked, (such as during a leg waxing) the amount of chemicals released may result in a change to hormone levels, especially the class of hormones known as Androgens. These Androgens could result in Polycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS), a leading cause of female infertility.

This research may lead women to an odd decision - keep themselves groomed and infertile, or keep themselves ungroomed - possibly making sex more awkward until the popular fashion surrounding female body hair eventually adjusts to more reasonable standards.

Socially Vent? No - Social EVENT

I'm a home body - I met my wife online, back in the 90's before it was fashionable. For many years to follow, we were a delightfully hermitish couple.

We didn't socialize much until recently, and now something is going on almost every weekend, and sometimes through the week too. (Lordy!)

It's no surprise that my social skills are lacking - and add to this the fact that I am a man, and 50% more awkward by default.

It seems it's a marriage faux pas to agree to social engagements without consulting the good lady wife - who knew?

It seems the biggest issue with saying "Sure, we can attend the 'Engagement X' on 'Date Y', sounds like fun." is that as a male I do not think to ask the appropriate questions.

When I arrive home to announce our fun-filled weekend plans, I am reminded gently of all of the questions I should have asked. How could I have not asked? What was I thinking? Hmm - I was thinking it would be fun?

So, to assist myself and any other males out there who have yet to learn proper social etiquette, here is:

The Official Social Event Questionnaire
(a work in progress)

  • What is the dress code?
  • Who else plans to attend?
  • What should we bring?

  • When should we arrive?
  • Should we help to set up/take down?
  • Is there a 'before' event?
  • Is there an 'after' event?
  • What time does main event begin?
  • How long will the event last?

  • If going out to dinner, where?
  • Will there be alcohol?
  • Will there be snacks?
  • If potluck, desired dish is?

  • Will we need to remove our shoes?
  • Will there be assigned seating?

  • Will there be carpooling?
  • Will there be children?

  • Is event indoors or outdoors?
  • What is the weather forecast?
  • What are the planned activities?

That's the list so far. If any of you ladies (or socially gifted men) who have any additions, please let me know!

A little friendly sex

As usual, I enjoyed the recent 'Stuff Mom Never Told You' podcast from How Stuff Works.

Have you checked it out yet? Good stuff. Last week's episode was titled 'Can men and women really be friends?' Of course, 'When Harry Met Sally' came up several times during the discussion.

I'm not a math person, but the platonic pals question seems like something you could reduce to a formula.

1) How much time do the pals spend together in a given day/week/month? Call this 'T'

2) Do they share 'Real Stuff' - feelings, hopes, dreams, good news, bad news? Or share only 'Superficial Stuff' like chatting about music and other entertainment? Call this 'S'

3) Do they drink alcohol or do other drugs? Call this 'D'

4) Are they in committed relationships with other people? Call this 'C'

5) Do they find one another at least somewhat attractive? Call this 'A'

6) Do they have prowess/experience with sex, have had casual sex several times in the past? Call this 'P'

If T = 15 hours or more per month
If S = Real Stuff
If D = Yes
If C = No
If A = Yes
If P = Yes
Then sex will happen at some point.

If the above conditions are met, it seems it's just a matter of time before the two of them are in the necessary emotional state at the right time, at the right level of inebriation, with the right opportunity and locale to have sex. Not that drugs are a necessary component, but it would be a factor in taking the edge off the 'Gosh, I couldn't have sex with my pal!' concern, making eventual intimacy more likely. People find a lot of solace in friendship, and physical intimacy is a great source of solace, making it almost inevitable given enough time.

This situation never happened to me, because the 'A' attribute was always lacking on my end (you'll only find a more asymmetrical face in something by Picasso) and I was never into 'D'. And I was clumsy and inexperienced while single - I'd give myself a P minus. All that said, I have no idea what I'm talking about.
