Freeway Snaps #18

Central Florida is supposed to be the lightning capitol of the U.S., but I've never seen a single lightning rod.

One of Cindy's coworkers had a house fire started by lightning - since lightning strikes are a real danger, you'd think I'd live in a forest of lightning rods, but no.

Overheard

"So Nick, kudos on your insight...It's not just the head cant, so guys, if the lady's not canting, it doesn't mean you can't win her over." - - Cristen Conger of the Stuff Mom Never Told You podcast.

It's a fun and informative podcast, consistently the best on the HowStuffWorks.com site - I recommend you check it out!

Stinky Much?

I made a run to the grocery store during lunch yesterday, grabbing an armful of goods.

Um, why is each item related to odor? What are the odds? I did not plan this, it just happened.

Real Life Conversation #52

If you want this yard sale to be a success, you need to work on your pitch.

My pitch is great. Fast and low, right across home plate.

Uh-huh. How about that last girl? She's like twelve. She would have loved the Louise Rennison books you're selling.

Nah, she was with her grandma - did you notice that woman? Rennison titles would not fly.

Such as?

'Angus, Thongs and Full-Frontal Snogging'.

Ok, sure, but-

Would 'I'm Now the Girlfriend of a Sex God' be better?

Well...

How would granny feel about 'Knocked Out by my Nunga-Nungas'?

When you put it that way...

'Dancing in my Nuddy-Pants'?
'Startled by His Furry Shorts'?
'Love is a Many Trousered Thing'?

Stop! Okay! You made your point.

Thank you.

Cosmic Orgasm

I mentioned in a recent post that I was not sure about the new Doctor Who and the upcoming season.

It all comes down to Steven Moffat really. During the one hour Doctor Who promo that aired before the season premiere, I discovered that Steven would be the new lead writer and executive producer. I literally jumped up and down crying out "Yes! Yes! Yes!"

Steven has written so many wonderful Doctor Who episodes, and a lot of other great stuff too.

If you're a Doctor Who fan, these episodes by Moffat should ring a bell:

The Empty Child
The Doctor Dances
The Girl in the Fireplace
Blink
Silence in the Library
Forest of the Dead
The End of Time

I'm very much looking forward to this season of Doctor Who!

Poppy Goodness

Over a year ago, my sister gave me an ear of popping corn - Uncle Ozgood's, to be specific.

The ear sat in my cupboard so long because it was with the oatmeal. I only spotted it while I was preparing breakfast, which meant that Cindy was either sleeping or half-asleep, and in no mood to enjoy popcorn popping right off the cob.

Finally I remembered the cob one evening. You're supposed to use the paper bag that comes with the cob, but what's the fun in that? I plopped the cob in a glass bowl and let the microwaves bombard it like some sinister Soviet Military Cold War test. It was really fun to watch the kernels bursting right off the cob, though there was a lot of steam which made it harder to see.

I can honestly say this was the most entertaining two minutes I've had with a microwave since I discovered what happens to marshmallows when you 'nuke' them.

Elements not line up. Must fix.

I'm tweaking the alignment of the elements on the blog, so some things might not be lining up at the moment.

While this troubles my OCD greatly, the strategically-placed post-it notes on the monitor are helping a lot. It will all be happy soon.

Doctoring the TARDIS

The new Doctor Who premiers (in the U.S.) this weekend. I don’t just mean the new season, but a new incarnation of The Doctor. It’s some punk kid Matt Smith (not Punk the style, punk the ‘I am unhappy with his presence’ type of punk) in the role of The Doctor, and he has some mighty big shoes to fill.

The new Doctor Who logoI’ve been a fan of Doctor Who since probably 6th grade (1984) when I first caught re-runs of Tom Baker’s version of The Doctor on PBS. Baker was my favorite until David Tennant came along. Tennant has just just the right mix of seriousness and manic glee for the role.

I’ve been thinking it’s high time for a female Doctor, but no such luck. Can you imagine Judi Dench as The Doctor? Michelle Ryan would have been good too, but she guest starred as another character. Ditto for Alex Kingston.

I’m hopeful that this punk kid will turn out to be a good The Doctor – I love the series!

Sally Sparrow is one of my favorite Doctor Who characters, from one of my favorite episodes - ‘Blink’. Sally is played by Carey Mulligan, who went on to win an Oscar for Best Actress in ‘An Education’. So much for my dreams of a ‘Sparrow & Nightingale’ spin-off series. Maybe I’ll do a fanfic of that one… I’ve never done a fanfic before, but this one would be fun.

Le Cinema de Dresden Codak

I've recommended 'Dresden Codak' before, but maybe you missed it. He creates gorgeous web comics, and now a fun retro video - check it out!

(It's only three minutes long, go for it!)

Pancake Hygeine?

How do you folks across the world clean the batter bowl pour spout between individual pancake pours?

I’ve tried a paper towel - which gets icky and needs to be tossed after one or two wipes, a wet hand towel - which quickly needs rinsed or you just spread batter everywhere…

I admit that I use the ‘lick it off’ method – it’s just me and my wife, so she’s not concerned with my cooties.

Which method do you use?

Yo Fax-Printer So Old...

  • it prints only on papyrus

  • uses lamb's blood for toner

  • runs on coal

  • was part of the spoils when Babylon was sacked

  • was hewn from a single piece of jade

  • uses a rotary dial

  • transmits using smoke signals

  • has a hand crank

  • the phone line is braided human hair, ending in a golden chalice

  • the 'days of the week' dial reads:
